- 6 cups day-old French or challah bread (torn into pieces)
- 4 large eggs
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 2 tsp pure vanilla extract
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1 cup raisins (optional, soaked in rum or water)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a baking dish.
- In a large bowl, tear the day-old bread into pieces and let sit for 30 minutes.
- In another bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, brown sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt until smooth.
- Pour the custard mixture over the torn bread and fold gently to coat evenly. If using raisins, add them now.
- Transfer the mixture to the prepared baking dish.
- Bake for 45-50 minutes until puffed and golden brown; a knife should come out clean.
- Let cool slightly before serving with cream or vanilla sauce.
